Selections are usually finialised six to twelve months prior to the fellowship. Whilst this fellowship has a clinical component it is NOT promoted as part of basic orthopaedic training. Lower Limb Reconstruction Fellowship
The lower limb reconstruction Fellowship at Melbourne Orthopaedic Group allows the successful applicant to work alongside A/Prof Andrew Shimmin and Mr Jonathan Bare’.
Length: Six – Twelve Months

Stipend: Approx. A$100,000 per annum

Foot and Ankle Fellowship
The fellowship is 6 months fulltime. It is for orthopaedic surgeons who have completed their fellowship training and are endorsed by their local association.
Length: Six Months

Stipend: Approx. A$90,000 p.a. Full time equivalent

Shoulder/Elbow Upper Limb Fellowship
There are two post-graduate, upper limb fellowships running concurrently through the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group. One is designated for Overseas trainees, and the other for Australian trainees. These fellowships encompasses all aspects of clinical involvement in shoulder and upper limb orthopaedic management in a busy eleven-member group practice.
Length: 6 months, starting in January/February or July/August

Stipend: AU$45,000 for full six months

Details for Prospective Fellows
The Melbourne Orthopaedic Group has six month posts available for SENIOR orthopaedic trainees wishing to expand their knowledge and experience. The particular areas of special interest include:
- Arthroplasty surgery
- Arthroscopic surgery
- Knee ligament reconstruction
- Sports injury surgery
- Shoulder surgery
- Hand surgery
- Upper limb surgery
- Foot and Ankle surgery
The fellowship also provides ample opportunity to undertake research activities, with time available during the working week. For accreditation purposes the Fellowship is recognised by the Australian Orthopaedic Association.
Education Goals and Characteristics
The fellowship encompasses all aspects of clinical involvement in sports orthopaedic management in a busy ten member group practice, including assessment of new patients, surgical treatment at assistant level (with level of responsibility dependant on proficiency demonstrated), post-operative care and rehabilitation.
Surgical procedures comprise all aspects of hip, knee and ankle reconstructive surgery including arthroscopic procedures, stabilizations and arthroplasty. There is a strong emphasis on elite athlete injury management. Several group members have a strong interest in shoulder surgery, with arthroscopic and open reconstructive procedures performed. An upper limb specialist practice provides exposure to hand, wrist and elbow arthroscopic and open reconstructive procedures. The fellow’s specific interest will dictate his clinical involvement.
The successful candidate is required to complete two research projects to the level of final draft during the tenure of the fellowship. The fellow will be involved with post-graduate education in sports medical surgery. The supervisor of the research project rotates throughout the group, and will depend on the sub-specialty interests of the fellow and the supervisor.
All fellows need to be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Victoria. The fellow will need to be registerable to practice at the two institutions currently used by the practice. In order to be granted registration the Medical Board of Victoria requires that all overseas-trained doctors be proficient in English, to which effect they must have passed the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with a score of at least 7 in each module, or an equivalent stipulated language test. Medical Indemnity Insurance is often reciprocal with country of origin, and is required for a limited exposure. Please note health insurance is advisable whilst in Australia.
