There are two post-graduate, upper limb fellowships running concurrently through the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group. One is designated for Overseas trainees, and the other for Australian trainees. The duration of each fellowship is 6 months, and incorporates a combination of clinical and research exposure.
Educational goals and characteristics
The fellowship encompasses all aspects of clinical involvement in shoulder and upper limb orthopaedic management in a busy eleven-member group practice, including assessment of new patients, surgical treatment at assistant level (with level of responsibility dependent on proficiency demonstrated), post- operative care and rehabilitation.
Surgical procedures comprise all aspects of shoulder and elbow reconstructive surgery including arthroscopic procedures, stabilisations, cuff management (both open and arthroscopic) and arthroplasty. There is a strong emphasis on elite athlete injury management. Exposure to hand, wrist and elbow arthroscopic and open reconstructive procedures are also undertaken. The fellow’s specific interest will dictate their clinical involvement.
The successful candidate is required to complete two research projects to the level of final draft during the tenure of the fellowship. The fellow will be involved with postgraduate education in upper limb surgery. The supervisor of the research project rotates within the subspecialty group and will depend on the subspecialty interests of the fellows and the supervisor.
Requirements/criteria
The applicant must:
- be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
- have English language IELTS pass of 7 in all four components
- have completed or be due to complete their training in orthopaedic surgery
- have evidence of research experience, including evidence of relevant published research
- provide medical practice indemnity insurance and health insurance for family while in Australia
- be eligible to obtain a 407 Training Visa.
